Founded in 2011, the mission of Walking Shadow Shakespeare Project is to unite classical texts with a contemporary community through innovative and accessible productions, social events, and educational opportunities.

Shakespeare has historically been associated with the privileges of time, money, and education. Walking Shadow is looking to dismantle those barriers in our community for both audiences and artists by making our shows fun, free, fast, and accessible to all learning levels.

We want every actor - regardless of race, gender, or ability - to feel the power that can come from living these characters on stage. We want them to get to be swept up in the poetry, the romance, and the magic without being alienated by these moments in the text.

We edit texts carefully and purposefully, changing or cutting negatively charged phrases wherever they come up. We also practice conscious casting - opening roles to actors of all genders, races, and abilities, but being mindful of where the power lives in the script from character to character to not reinforce societal power imbalances on stage.

It's easy to say that Shakespeare is for everyone, but that's a gross oversimplification.
We fully believe that Shakespeare can be for everyone, but it takes work, time, and care.

…introducing artists of all ages and experience to the poetry and power of Shakespeare…It’s inclusive, fun and challenging to all who care to partake.”

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more."  - Macbeth
